ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a significant step towards addressing environmental concerns and boosting the local economy, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art recycling plant in the Independent Administration of Soran.

This strategic project, promised by the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, comes with an investment of 24 billion Iraqi dinars and is set to transform waste management in the area.

The recycling plant, to be constructed on an expansive 125,000 square meter site, is scheduled for completion within 18 months. This facility is expected to resolve a major environmental challenge faced by the region, processing between 300 to 350 tons of daily waste generated in the Soran administration area.

Sasan Awni, Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, highlighted the project's environmental significance, stating, "This project will have a positive environmental impact. We extend our gratitude to the Prime Minister for initiating this crucial development."

The plant is designed to handle up to 400 tons of waste daily, serving 24 municipalities in the area. It will also create approximately 100 job opportunities, contributing to local employment. A specialized section within the facility will be dedicated to the scientific disposal of medical waste, addressing a critical aspect of public health and safety.

Khosrow Ismail, Director General of Soran Municipalities, told Kurdistan24, "This project will bring substantial economic benefits. It will also enable the recycling and reuse of materials processed at the plant."

The implementation of this recycling plant represents a shift from viewing waste as a burden to seeing it as a potential resource and source of income.

This project aligns with global trends towards sustainable waste management and circular economy principles. By investing in recycling infrastructure, the KRG is taking a proactive approach to environmental protection and resource conservation.

The establishment of this plant is expected to have far-reaching effects beyond waste management. It could potentially stimulate the growth of related industries, improve public health outcomes, and enhance the overall quality of life in the Soran area.

As the Kurdistan Region continues to develop its infrastructure and address environmental challenges, projects like the Soran recycling plant serve as important milestones in the region's progress towards sustainable development and improved public services.
