Turkish FM outlines vision for Syria's transition, regional security

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday, the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan delivered wide-ranging observations regarding the Syrian situation during a press conference.

While addressing Syria's political transition and Turkey's role in regional stability, he offered noteworthy insights into Turkey's diplomatic position amid the dramatic changes ensuing in Syria.

Regional Security and Transition

The Turkish FM highlighted that the new Syria must not pose threats to neighboring countries.

"The new Syria should eradicate present threats rather than make new ones," he stated.

He underlined the significance of safeguarding a smooth political transition that preserves essential services for citizens.

Failed Diplomatic Efforts

Moreover, Hakan Fidan revealed that Turkey had endeavored to engage with the Assad regime over the past two months, though these efforts proved unsuccessful.

This was also mentioned by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Dec. 6.

"We understood signs of the regime's steady weakening," Fidan explained, noting that Assad's administration neglected to deal with critical issues, leading to its ultimate downfall without military clash.

International Coordination

Speaking about international cooperation, Fidan emphasized continuing dialogue with American counterparts regarding regional security concerns, in particular regarding groups like ISIS and PKK.

"We maintain close communication with our American allies who understand our sensitive approach to these security matters," he stated.

Future Stability Measures

The minister outlined Turkey's pledge to backing Syria's institutional rebuilding, highlighting the need for all-encompassing cooperation among all Syrian factions.

He stated specific concern about potential security fears, stating that Turkey would keep monitoring the situation to thwart terrorist organizations from take advantage of the current situation.

Post-Transition Engagement

Looking forward, Fidan indicated Turkey's willingness to work with Syria's new administration on economic and political matters, stressing the importance of upholding institutional stability during the transition period.

He voiced optimism about the opposition groups' coordination mechanisms while admitting the significance of challenges that are ahead of Syrians.
