UK PM Sir Kier Starmer's statement on Syria

UK is ready to support the democratic, political and power transition in peace and secure, encouraging all parties for the political solution, encourages all sides to protect civilians and minorities and to ensure aid reaches needful people.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – Following the drastic developments in Syria country, especially, on Sunday December 8th, 2024, ousting President Al-Assad and his whole regime in the country, the British media network reported that according to the Russian state media reports, the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in Moscow, and has been granted asylum by Russia. 

The Syrian situation has been given spotlights around the world, worries alongside the unpredicted changes dominate the neighbouring countries, all are watching closely what might happen next! 

Waiting for rapid international government's reactions and actions regarding Syria is monitored too, and by all means the governments who have the authorities and affect any decision-making and outcomes in the UN.

The UK Government is speaking to its partners in the region for providing support towards restoring stability to the country.

"The developments in Syria in recent hours and days are unprecedented, and we are speaking to our partners in the region and monitoring the situation closely.

The Syrian people have suffered under Assad's barbaric regime for too long and we welcome his departure. Our focus is now on ensuring a political solution prevails, and peace and stability is restored.

We call on all sides to protect civilians and minorities and ensure essential aid can reach the most vulnerable in the coming hours and days." 

More than a decade ago, during David Cameron's government in the UK, the parliament held debate to vote on British airstrikes and military intervention to Syria. Sir Starmer and now-Deputy Prime Minster, Rayner, Labour MPs, both voted against the strikes.
