KRG Interior Minister receives phone call from UK Home Sec. Yevette Cooper

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Region Government, the Minister of Interior at the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Rebar Ahmed, received a phone call, on Wednesday, December 19, 2024, from the UK Home Secretary, Rt Hon Yvette Cooper. 

The statement said, "during the conversation, both ministers exchanged views on recent regional security developments, particularly in Syria, and emphasized the importance of close collaboration in addressing shared challenges" 

It further stressed that the two sides emphasized their commitment to tackle organised crime and reducing illegal immigration, as well as to enhance the joint cooperation to ensure stability and security in the region.

The statement also mentioned that Mr. Ahmed welcomed the Kurdistan Region's constant partnership with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and strengthening the shared interests.  

Upon her visits to Kurdistan Region, Rt Hon Cooper met with the KRG Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, where she highlighted the strong position of Kurdistan Region, and described it as an important and strategic partner for her country in fighting against the terrorism and security challenges.

Earlier this month, UK and German government's Ministers of Interior, Cooper and her German counterpart, Nancy Faeser, signed a Joint Action-plan, on December 10th, 2024.

The UK Home Secretary, Cooper warned that whoever had hands in smuggling and human trafficking to pursue them & their supply chains, for that purpose, a Joint work between the UK and Iraq has been signed, too.

Back in the UK, the Rt Hon Cooper questioned by the Home Affairs Committee, on Tuesday, December 17th, 2024, regarding several serious matters that currently dominating the circumstances widely in the world as well. 

The topics were ranged between migration and the asylum system, Summer disorder, Police funding and standards and Crime including anti-social behaviour. 

The Home Affairs Committee launched another inquiry session, on Thursday, December 19th, 2024, regarding the asylum system and its costs on the budget in the UK, following Labour Government's pledged to end the use of hotels and reduce spending on asylum accommodation. 

Dame Karen Bradley said, “the Government has made reforming the asylum accommodation system and ending the use of asylum hotels a key pledge"

Furthermore, the Committee invites for the written submissions and evidence from the Home Secretary by Monday, February 3rd, 2025.

In the meanwhile, Home Sec. Cooper and her team attempts continue to focus on coordinating and cooperating with Kurdistan Region, Iraq and European countries to tackle illegal immigration, drug-smuggling gangs, strengthen border security, co-operation and tackle serious and organised crime.
