ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – President Masoud Barzani remains the principal point of contact for any international party aiming to address Kurdish issues,” said Mohammed Ismail, Secretary of the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNCS) on Saturday.

“President Barzani is the father figure for the Kurdish people; he carries out the burden of their struggle; he remains the principal point of contact for any international party aiming to address Kurdish issues,” Ismail told Kurdistan24.

Following the fall of the Assad regime in Dec. 2024, President Barzani has intensified efforts to unify Kurdish parties in Syria, urging them to present a cohesive front in discussions with the new administration in Damascus.

In an interview with Shams TV on Friday, President Barzani called on Syria’s new government to end the suffering of Kurdish communities and recognize their rights.

“The most important expectation from the new Syrian administration is to lift the decades-long oppression imposed on the Kurds,” President Barzani stated.

President Barzani expressed optimism about the Kurdistan Region’s potential role in supporting Syrian Kurds. “The Kurdistan Region can play a significant role in uniting Syrian Kurds, encouraging dialogue with Damascus, and sharing its experiences to help them shape their future,” he explained. However, he noted that replicating the Kurdistan Region’s model in Syria is not necessarily the solution, as “each region has its own unique circumstances.”

Last week, President Barzani and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander-in-chief Mazloum Abdi, emphasized Kurdish unity, according to a statement from Barzani headquarters.

They emphasized that the Kurdish parties in Syria should determine their own fate without interference and through peaceful means, ensuring their rights in unity and solidarity with the upcoming Syrian government.
