ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Minister Safeen Dizayee, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations (DFR), underscored the importance of strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between the Kurdistan Region and Italy during an economic forum in Rome on Tuesday.

Addressing diplomats, government officials, and business leaders, Dizayee emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation across key sectors, including investment, energy, and food security.

During his remarks, Minister Dizayee reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to fostering economic diversification, particularly in agriculture and energy, as part of broader efforts to reduce reliance on oil revenues.

He highlighted the region’s fertile lands and natural resources, positioning Kurdistan as a potential hub for food security in Iraq and beyond. “The Kurdistan Region has the capacity not only to achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural production but also to contribute to exports,” he stated, noting the increased global focus on energy and food security following the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

On investment, Dizayee invited Italian businesses to explore opportunities in Kurdistan’s growing market, highlighting the region’s business-friendly policies and economic incentives. He acknowledged that while strong diplomatic and security cooperation exists between Italy and the Kurdistan Region, economic collaboration must be further developed. “There is always room for improvement. We believe Italy can establish a stronger foothold in Kurdistan’s market and beyond,” he said.

Minister Dizayee also addressed regional security concerns, particularly the situation in Syria and its potential impact on Iraq and Kurdistan. He expressed hope that any new Syrian government would adopt inclusive policies that ensure the rights of all ethnic and religious groups, including Kurds. Additionally, he praised Italy’s contributions as part of the international coalition in the fight against ISIS, emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance against the group’s resurgence. “We won the fight, but we have not yet won the war. The reorganization of ISIS remains a serious threat,” he cautioned.

Furthermore, the Minister highlighted Kurdistan’s longstanding commitment to coexistence, noting that the region has provided refuge to millions displaced by conflict, including Christians, Yazidis, and other minority groups. “The Kurdistan Region remains a beacon of stability, tolerance, and economic opportunity in the Middle East,” he affirmed.

In conclusion, Minister Dizayee reiterated Kurdistan’s openness to foreign investment and collaboration, inviting Italian businesses to seize the opportunities available in the region. He expressed appreciation for Italy’s diplomatic engagement and looked forward to further strengthening ties. “The people of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region deserve stability, peace, and prosperity, and with international support, we can achieve that,” he concluded.
