Erbil (Kurdistan 24) – Hevi Mustafa, the former president of Afrin Canton, confirmed that the announcement of a Kurdish political unity in Syria is imminent, following significant progress in recent discussions between Kurdish parties. She emphasized that the recent understandings have removed most of the previous obstacles, paving the way for a historic agreement that ensures a unified representation for Kurds in Syria.

Message to Kurdistan 24

At the beginning of her statement, Mustafa expressed her gratitude to Kurdistan 24, praising its role in delivering news with professionalism and transparency, free from bias. "We have great hopes in this media platform because it conveys the truth as it is, without hidden agendas. We hope it will contribute to unifying the Kurdish ranks. Kurdistan is in all of our hearts, and the name of this channel carries deep significance in that regard," she said.

Factors Driving Kurdish Unity Beyond Assad’s Fall

Mustafa pointed out that while the fall of the Assad regime was a major turning point, it was not the only factor pushing towards unity. The dissolution of the Syrian opposition coalition, which included several Kurdish parties, along with the rise of Ahmed al-Sharaa to power and the repeated attacks on Kurdish regions, have all played a crucial role in bringing Kurdish parties closer together.

She further explained that public pressure from all segments of Kurdish society—women, youth, and elders—was a decisive factor in urging parties to move toward unity. "Today, the Kurdish street is politically aware and capable of evaluating political positions and determining where its national interest lies. Kurdish parties have reached a shared understanding that failing to seize this historic opportunity could mean losing it forever," she noted.

Has the Kurdish Agreement Become a Reality?

Regarding whether the Kurdish political unity has been officially sealed, Mustafa revealed that previous disputes between the Kurdish National Council (KNC) and the Democratic Union Party (PYD) no longer pose a major obstacle. She highlighted that recent meetings between the two sides resulted in positive understandings, making an official announcement of Kurdish political unity highly likely in the near future.

"I expect that soon, we will share the good news with our people regarding the declaration of Kurdish political unity. The formation of a joint delegation to engage with Damascus has already been agreed upon, with only the selection of members remaining," she stated.

Challenges That Delayed Kurdish Unity

Mustafa identified several obstacles that previously hindered efforts to achieve a unified Kurdish political vision. One of the biggest issues, she said, was the ‘ego syndrome’—a psychological barrier imposed by adversaries that led some Kurdish politicians to prioritize personal or partisan interests over national unity. "Continuing down this path will result in the loss of our rights and may ultimately lead to the disintegration of the parties themselves," she warned.

Another major challenge was the regional and international affiliations of Kurdish parties, which often restricted their ability to make independent decisions. "This external influence has long stalled the process of unity," she said.

Mustafa stressed that while political differences are natural in any democratic setting, Kurds in Syria must prioritize their national cause over internal disputes, ensuring that their diplomatic delegation presents a unified voice when engaging with the international community.

She also warned that failure to assess the political landscape correctly could lead to historical mistakes similar to the Treaty of Lausanne, which denied Kurds their rights a century ago. "If we fail to achieve Kurdish unity now, we may be forced to wait another hundred years under oppression and persecution," she cautioned.

International Mediators and Their Role in Kurdish Dialogue

Mustafa acknowledged the crucial role of international mediators in bringing Kurdish factions closer together. She noted that international envoys had met separately with Kurdish parties and participated in joint meetings to facilitate reconciliation.

However, she also pointed out that global powers act in their own interests. "International forces often demand compromises from the Kurds in exchange for political gains. We, as Kurds, must align our interests with those of the international community to ensure we achieve our rights. But if Kurdish unity is realized, we will no longer be dependent on foreign support," she asserted.

Could Kurdish Unity Lead to the Return of Afrin, Sari Kani, and Gire Spi?

Hevi Mustafa stressed that the absence of Kurdish unity was one of the primary reasons for the loss of Afrin, Sari Kani (Ras al-Ain), and Gire Spi (Tell Abyad). She recalled that Afrin was one of the most stable cities in Syria, serving as a refuge for those seeking safety. Despite this, external forces took advantage of Kurdish divisions to launch an offensive and occupy these areas.

She emphasized that the attacks were never just against a specific Kurdish party, but targeted the entire Kurdish presence in the region. The invaders carried out ethnic cleansing, destroyed olive groves, looted historical sites, and committed atrocities against the Kurdish population.

However, she expressed confidence that achieving Kurdish unity would eliminate the pretexts used to justify these attacks. Furthermore, she noted that a strong Kurdish agreement would pave the way for the return of displaced Kurds to their lands, with international guarantees ensuring that such tragedies do not repeat.

Conclusion: Unity or Annihilation

In her concluding remarks, Mustafa delivered a direct message to Kurdish political forces, stating: "The Kurdish people will not forgive those who squander this historic opportunity. Unity is no longer a choice; it is the only path to securing our rights and safeguarding the future of our people in Syria."
