ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Scott Bates, a Senior Advisor at the National Democratic Institute, affirmed that Kurdish officials are regarded with deep respect in Washington, emphasizing that their perspectives are highly valued by U.S. decision-makers. He described the Kurdistan Region as a “trusted and important friend” of the United States, pointing to the long-standing and bipartisan nature of the relationship.

‘Kurdish Voices Are Taken Seriously in Washington’

In an interview with Kurdistan24, Bates underscored that Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s current visit to Washington carries strategic significance, particularly in the wake of the U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent tour of the Middle East.

“The Kurdish issue was among the key topics discussed during President Trump’s meetings with regional leaders,” Bates noted. “This is a highly important development.”

He stressed that the presence of the largest U.S. consulate complex in the world, located in Erbil, reflects Washington’s enduring commitment to strengthening its ties with the Kurdistan Region.

A Partnership Spanning 25 Years

Bates reiterated that the new U.S. administration is determined to continue fostering its “strong and vital partnership” with the Kurdistan Region, a relationship that has evolved over the past quarter-century.

“Kurdistan enjoys strong relations with both major American political parties—the Republicans and the Democrats,” he said, highlighting the Region’s broad bipartisan support in the United States.
