DEM Party Welcomes Parliamentary Peace Commission as a Step Toward Democratic Reform
Dogan stressed that while the establishment of the commission—formally named the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Committee—is a meaningful development, it is not sufficient on its own to bring about lasting peace.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Aysegul Dogan, spokesperson for the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), announced on Thursday that the formation of a new parliamentary commission marks a significant step forward in Turkey’s long-stalled peace process. She called for the commission’s efforts to be inclusive and solution-oriented.
Dogan stressed that while the establishment of the commission—formally named the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Committee—is a meaningful development, it is not sufficient on its own to bring about lasting peace.
“To achieve true peace, freedom, and democracy, the government must go beyond symbolic gestures and address the root causes of conflict,” Dogan said. “Turkey needs democracy and equal brotherhood. The commission must not only seek to end years of tension and violence, but also confront the deep-seated injustices that gave rise to them.”
She also urged the committee to prioritize humanitarian issues, including the release of ailing political prisoners and those who have already completed their sentences.
“The creation of this commission should mark the beginning of a transformative process. We call on its members to take concrete steps, especially in advocating for the rights of sick and political prisoners,” she added.
The commission is set to hold its second meeting on Friday amid growing public and political interest in its potential role in easing decades of conflict and polarization in the country.
