Iraqi Intelligence Warns of Plot to Assassinate Supreme Court Chief Faiq Zidan
According to the source, armed groups were allegedly planning to target Zidan using an explosive-laden drone.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A senior Iraqi government security source told Kurdistan24 on Monday that intelligence agencies had received information about a plot to assassinate Faiq Zidan, president of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council.
According to the source, armed groups were allegedly planning to target Zidan using an explosive-laden drone.
The reported assassination plot is believed to be linked to the ongoing debate over disarming armed groups and placing all weapons under state control. Iraq’s ruling authorities have set September 30 as a deadline for armed factions to surrender their weapons or bring them under state authority.
Against this backdrop, Iraq’s four presidencies—the president, parliament speaker, prime minister, and president of the Supreme Judicial Council—held a meeting to discuss the country’s security and political situation.
The meeting focused primarily on the September 30 deadline for disarming armed groups and possible measures to be taken against factions that refuse to surrender their weapons.
The reported threat comes as Baghdad faces growing pressure to ensure that all armed activity falls under state authority, while some factions have resisted or conditioned disarmament on the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq.
