ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Professor Amy Austin, a researcher at George Washington University, affirmed that the ongoing visit by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to the United States arrives at a “critically important time,” especially following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent Middle East tour that reignited international focus on energy, investment, and economic development across the region.
In an interview with Kurdistan24, Professor Austin emphasized that both PM Barzani and president Trump share a common strategic outlook centered on bolstering economic partnerships and expanding the energy sector.
“This visit is fundamentally aligned with a shared vision to advance investment and energy development,” Austin noted. “The agreements to be signed between the Kurdistan Regional Government and American companies will carry long-term strategic value, yielding mutual benefits.”
Diplomatic Talks and Regional Dialogue
Professor Austin also expects Prime Minister Barzani’s meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State to include in-depth discussions on key regional issues.
“These talks will likely cover relations with Iraq and Turkey,” she stated, adding that “the topic of religious pluralism and peaceful coexistence in Kurdistan is also expected to be addressed—an issue of special interest to influential figures like the secretary of State Marco Rubio.”
Strategic Partnership Reflected in U.S. Presence
Commenting on the deepening ties between the United States and the Kurdistan Region, Austin highlighted the recent establishment of the largest U.S. consulate in the world, located in Erbil, as a powerful indicator of trust and long-term partnership.
“Kurdistan will remain a central player in the region’s evolving dynamics, particularly concerning the Syrian file,” she asserted.
