PM Barzani, UN envoy in Iraq discuss parliamentary elections

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday received the head of the United Nations Assistance Mission to Iraq (UNAMI) Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, in which they discussed Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections.

Prime Minister Barzani reiterated his support for parliamentary elections, stating that they should take place in a legal and normal manner, without constitutional violations or interference, and in accordance with the Kurdistan Region's constitutional structure and the rights of ethnic and religious communities.

Additionally, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the international community monitoring a fair and transparent electoral process.

Both sides agreed to resolve the problems that are affecting the elections and find a solution to protect the democratic process and stability in the Kurdistan Region.

Every four years, Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections are held to elect the 111 members. The election was first held in 1992 and the most recent election was held in 2018.

On March 28, Jumana al-Ghalai, the spokesperson of the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) revealed that 3,789,360 people are eligible to vote in the Kurdistan Region and that 2,783,552 have renewed their voter registration cards, which is more than one million voters, 26% of the total number of voters.
