Peshmerga general highlights ongoing ISIS threat on 10th anniversary of Gwer-Makhmour liberation
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Major-General Sirwan Barzani, Commander of Sector 6 of the Peshmerga forces, has issued a stern warning about the persistent threat posed by ISIS. Speaking to Kurdistan24 on Friday, Barzani emphasized that ISIS movements continue to pose a significant danger, particularly in areas where security gaps exist.
"ISIS must be fought both ideologically and militarily because its extremist ideology persists, and the threat remains," Barzani stated. He underscored that ISIS is actively seeking opportunities to attack civilians and security forces.
Reflecting on the past, Barzani expressed deep gratitude for the coalition's support in the fight against ISIS, particularly during the liberation of the Gwer-Makhmour region. "The liberation of Makhmour was not easy," he recalled. "ISIS had very heavy weapons—those that once belonged to the Iraqi army—but with the spirit of the Peshmerga and the leadership of [Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)] President Masoud Barzani, we were able to defeat them at the international level, making history for the Peshmerga."
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the liberation of Gwer-Makhmour from ISIS by Peshmerga forces, led by KDP President Masoud Barzani and supported by coalition forces. This significant victory came at a critical time when ISIS was advancing towards Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region. The successful defense and eventual liberation of these areas remain a testament to the bravery and resilience of the Peshmerga forces.
