Blast in Baghdad kills several, claimed by IS

More than 11 people were killed and over 20 wounded in a suicide attack targeting the northwest of Baghdad on Sunday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – More than 11 people were killed and over 20 wounded in a suicide attack targeting the northwest of Baghdad on Sunday.

A suicide bomber who wrapped himself with an explosive vest directed the attack at security forces in the entrance of the Kadhimiya neighborhood said a security source.

Following the explosion, ambulances rushed to the scene and transferred the injured people to the nearest hospitals.

Hospital sources told Kurdistan24 that the blast killed over 11 and wounded many people.

After the blast, Amaq, a news outlet that supports the Islamic State (IS), confirmed that IS had carried out the attack.

Kadhimiya hospital sources stated that the death toll of Sunday’s blast might rise as the wounds of some of the injured people are critical.

Moreover, on July 3 a large truck packed with explosive devices blew up in the busy street of Karada in Baghdad, killing and wounding hundreds of people.

According to the Ministry of Health, 292 people lost their lives, and over 200 people were injured.

The Karada explosion is seen as one of the deadliest attacks in Iraq since the liberation of the country in 2003.

On July 4, Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi visited the neighborhood that was attacked to offer his condolences to the families of the victims.

However, the visit backfired, and people threw stones and shoes at his convoy of vehicles, refusing to accept his sympathy.

As the number of explosions continues to rise in Baghdad, people feel more insecure and complain that the federal government is not protecting the capital from the threat of IS.
