Baghdad explosion death toll reaches 292

The death toll of Sunday explosion in Baghdad reached 292, the Health Ministry of Iraq announced on Thursday.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The death toll of Sunday explosion in Baghdad reached 292, the Health Ministry of Iraq announced on Thursday.

On July 3, a large truck packed with explosive devices blew up in the busy street of Karada in Baghdad, killing and wounding hundreds of people.

The street is a Shia-Arab dominated area where people were shopping for Eid celebrations that follow the Muslim's holy month of Ramadan. The explosion was one of the bloodiest attacks in Iraq in the last few years.

In the second day of Eid, three bombs exploded in three different areas in west of Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 19 others.

On July 4, the Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi visited the neighborhood that was attacked to offer condolences to the family of the victims, but people threw stones and shoes at his convoy of vehicles and refused to accept his sympathy.

Additionally, on Tuesday, the Interior Minister of Iraq Mohamad Ghabban resigned and stated that the deputy will take over his responsibilities.

Following the explosion, the people of the Kurdistan Region showed solidarity on social media to the family of the victims. The President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani condemned the attack and expressed their sympathies to the victims.

Moreover, on Tuesday, people in Erbil, Sulaimani and Duhok in the Kurdistan Region, held a candle vigil for the victims.

In the last few weeks, IS has launched series of attacks on Baghdad in different parts of the province that have killed and wounded many people, mostly civilians.
