PM Barzani lays foundation stones for Zakho industrial zone, waste recycling plant
The twin projects will create around 5,000 job opportunities for the local population, according to government officials.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday officially announced the construction process of the Zakho industrial zone and waste recycling plant as two strategic projects for the district.
Barzani was joined by senior Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet members as well as local officials in Zakho's independent administration to lay the foundation stone of the projects.
“These two important and strategic projects will bring many benefits to Zakho,” Barzani told the audience.
The twin projects will create around 5,000 job opportunities for the local population, according to government officials.
The industrial projects will greatly contribute to the development of the Kurdistan Region, Barzani said, adding the Region’s market is “new”; work should be done to meet its requirements, and imports should be limited.
“For the Kurdistan Region’s economic development, we need to connect the markets,” the premier said, hailing the importance of developed transportation routes that his cabinet had built to shorten the distance between cities and towns.
The waste recycling plant, estimated to cost around 31 billion IQD (over $23 million), aims to recycle about 80 percent of the waste that is produced in the area, according to the government.
In addition to creating hundreds of job opportunities, the project will contribute to cleaning and protecting the environment as well as reducing the health hazards emanating from burning and landfills, Barzani said.
