On International Day of Disappeared, ICRC renew its vow to support families of missing people
In ICRC’s record there are 618 new cases of disappeared people between January and June 2024, it also declared that 208 people’s fates were determined.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced in a written statement on Friday, which reaffirms its commitment to coordinate with the Iraqi Authorities to tackle the issue of missing people.
On the International Day of Disappeared People, ICRC confirmed its support through providing technical support, legal advice and the information about the international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) to address the cause of missing persons as well as of the identification and dignified treatment of the deceased.
Through cooperation experience and logistic technics, it suggested the methods to coordinate separately with family members of the missing individuals, finding contacts, and determine the fate and whereabouts of missing persons.
In ICRC’s record, there are 618 new cases of disappeared people between January and June 2024, it also declared that 208 people’s fates were determined.
On this occasion, ICRC highlighted the need for a coordinated effort to find, recover, identify and return missing human remains as important and urgent as the rest of the cause.
In the very statement, the ICRC urges for an effective coordination to take necessary actions to deter the occurrence of disappearing.
A call also made by ICRC to the state authorities to strengthen mechanisms and resources for such critical task. To ensure respect for the dead, to provide the details and support to families of missing people who need to resolve the uncertainty.
In Iraq, since 1980, ICRC exists and works, its main fields of working are, reuniting separated families, and clarifying the fate of missing people, visiting detainees, disseminating and promoting international humanitarian law among all classes of Iraqi society.
According to the organization’s section for editors, ICRC works to mitigate any negative effects from the climate changes, assists communities, on the long-term run, for example water treatment plants, drinking water pumps, water networks and irrigation systems.
It also provides support to hundreds of affected families by financially helping them to bring back their life to the usual, and that is with a close cooperation with the Iraqi National Red Crescent Society.
