ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A panel discussion on the future of energy in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region was held during the fifth day of the 29th Climate Change Conference (COP29), featuring key insights into the Kurdistan Regional Government's renewable energy initiatives.

Rawa Mohammed Penjweni, Director of Renewable Energy at the Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Electricity, outlined the government's efforts to transition to renewable energy sources during the panel session.

"The world is collectively working towards abandoning traditional energy sources," Penjweni stated. He emphasized that the Kurdistan Region has taken several steps toward this important goal, particularly in solar energy utilization, which he described as "the best alternative source given the region's climate."

Penjweni revealed that three contracts have been signed for solar energy projects, which will generate 350 megawatts of electricity. He outlined the ministry's ambitious plans:

Short-term Goals:
- Addition of 1,000 megawatts from renewable sources

Long-term Goals:
- Expansion to 3,000 megawatts through diversified renewable sources including:
  - Solar power
  - Hydroelectric power
  - Wind energy

The director also announced plans to incorporate renewable energy into public transportation systems, noting that this transition "requires a well-structured, step-by-step plan."

The Kurdistan Region's participation in COP29 demonstrates its commitment to addressing climate change and transitioning to renewable energy sources. This initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and combat climate change.

The Region's geography and climate make it particularly suitable for solar energy development, with abundant sunshine throughout the year.

These renewable energy projects represent a significant step toward reducing the Region's carbon footprint and ensuring sustainable energy security for future generations.
