ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement of condolence today following a deadly blast near Khurmatu that claimed the lives of three military personnel.
In his statement, President Barzani expressed: "I extend my deepest condolences to the families of today's martyrs who fell victim to a terrorist attack near Khurmatu.”
The incident occurred when an improvised explosive device targeted a vehicle carrying officers from a joint Peshmerga-Iraqi Army brigade, resulting in the martyrdom of three officers.
“I pray to Almighty God to grant peace to their souls and provide comfort to all those affected. We stand in solidarity with the families and wish a swift recovery to those injured," the statement read.
The Kurdistan Region President emphasized the ongoing threat of terrorism, stating: "This terrorist act proves that terrorism remains a real danger and continues to threaten the stability and security of Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the broader area, particularly targeting citizens in Article 140 areas.
“We reiterate the importance of maintaining and strengthening joint coordination and cooperation between Peshmerga forces, the Iraqi Army, and coalition forces to combat and defeat terrorists," the statement underscored.
Article 140 areas refer to Kurdistani territories between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the federal government of Iraq, including regions like Khurmatu.
These areas have been particularly vulnerable to security challenges and terrorist activities.
Joint operations between Peshmerga and Iraqi forces in these regions are part of ongoing efforts to maintain security and combat terrorist threats.
The latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges in these disputed territories and the continued necessity for coordinated counter-terrorism efforts.
