ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Jordan’s Interior Minister Mazin al-Farrayeh announced the closure of the Jaber border crossing with Syria on Friday, citing security concerns as the primary reason for the decision.

Speaking to the Jordanian news agency Petra, al-Farrayeh stated, “Only Jordanians and Jordanian trucks will be allowed to return, so crossing into Syrian territory will be completely prohibited.” He emphasized the continued vigilance of Jordanian forces in safeguarding the country’s borders and said Jordan is closely monitoring developments in Syria.

The Jaber border crossing, located opposite Syria’s Nasib crossing, has been the only functional gateway for tourism and trade between the two nations since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011. Over the past 13 years, the crossing has been repeatedly opened and closed due to security concerns arising from the conflict.

Jordan shares a 375-kilometer border with Syria and has been significantly impacted by the ongoing crisis. The United Nations reports that more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees have sought refuge in Jordan since the conflict began, with approximately 680,000 officially registered.

The closure of the Jaber crossing underscores the persistent challenges posed by the Syrian conflict, which continues to affect regional stability and bilateral relations.
