ERBIL (Kurdistan24)– On the 21st anniversary of the Feb. 1st terrorist attacks, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated that unity and solidarity remain the most powerful tributes to those who sacrificed their lives for the Kurdish cause.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Regional President paid tribute to the martyrs, highlighting that their legacy serves as both a reminder of past struggles and a call to collective resilience.
The Feb. 1st attacks, which targeted Kurdish leaders, activists, and civilians indiscriminately, stand as one of the most tragic moments in Kurdistan’s modern history.
Kurdistan Region’s President Barzani acknowledged that those who perished that day have become symbols of Kurdish unity through their sacrifice, underlining the ongoing struggle to preserve Kurdish rights and protect the region’s hard-won achievements.
“Their deaths,” Barzani stated, “serve as a poignant reminder of the collective loss suffered by the Kurdish people at the hands of terrorists.”
However, he stressed that the most meaningful way to honor their memory is to uphold the values they fought for—by standing together in the face of adversity and reaffirming the unity of the Kurdish people.
The Power of Unity in Protecting Kurdish Achievements
Regional President Nechirvan Barzani made it clear that solidarity is not just a tribute to the fallen but a necessity for the future.
He underscored that division and fragmentation weaken the Kurdish cause, making the region susceptible to external threats and political instability.
At a time when the Kurdistan Region faces complex geopolitical challenges and regional pressures, KRP Barzani called for greater cooperation among political factions and Kurdish institutions to ensure the continuation of hard-won rights, autonomy, and stability.
He warned that terrorist threats still loom, making internal cohesion all the more crucial in defending the region from both external aggression and internal discord.
Commemoration as a Moment of Reflection and Renewal
Beyond honoring the martyrs, President Barzani called for the annual commemoration to serve as a moment of reflection and renewal.
He encouraged the Kurdish people to use these solemn occasions to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and reaffirm their commitment to a shared future.
“This recognition of common purpose and collective memory,” he stated, “is essential for building a stronger future while honoring the sacrifices of those lost.”
The February 1st anniversary remains a cornerstone of Kurdish collective memory, reminding the nation of both the costs of past struggles and the responsibilities of the present.
