PM Masrour Barzani Discusses Regional Dynamics, Kurdistan’s Role in Stabilization Efforts
PM Barzani confirmed that the future presence of coalition forces in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region remains a matter of ongoing discussions, as the security landscape continues to evolve.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, in a recent interview with Al-Arabiya, addressed key regional developments, Iraq’s relations with the United States, the role of coalition forces, and the Kurdistan Region’s diplomatic balancing act between the U.S. and Iran.
Coalition Forces in Kurdistan and Iraq’s Security Strategy
Barzani confirmed that the future presence of coalition forces in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region remains a matter of ongoing discussions, as the security landscape continues to evolve.
“The initial plan was for coalition forces to leave Iraq by the end of 2025, while their presence in the Kurdistan Region was expected to continue until the end of 2026. However, given recent developments, I believe Baghdad is reassessing this timeline,” he stated.
He emphasized that security challenges remain a top priority and that the Kurdistan Region welcomes coalition forces to maintain stability.
When asked about discussions with Baghdad on this matter, Barzani confirmed continued engagement with federal officials and coalition partners.
“We are in constant communication with Baghdad and have made it clear that we recognize the risks involved. While the decision ultimately rests with the federal government, we have expressed Kurdistan’s willingness to host coalition forces to address ongoing threats,” he explained.
U.S.-Kurdistan Relations and Balancing Ties with Iran
Addressing the Kurdistan Region’s long-standing alliance with the United States, Barzani expressed appreciation for continued support from Washington, particularly in counterterrorism and stabilization efforts.
“We have good relations with the United States. They have been a great supporter of Iraq in general and Kurdistan in particular, especially during the fight against ISIS,” he noted.
Asked about how the Kurdistan Region balances ties between the U.S. and Iran, Barzani emphasized Kurdistan’s independent decision-making.
“We control our own destiny and are not proxies for any party. We have good relations with the United States, and we take pride in that. At the same time, Iran is our neighbor, and we maintain respectful and stable relations. There have been times of tension, but we believe goodwill and mutual respect are the keys to resolving misunderstandings,” he explained.
Denial of Israeli Presence in the Kurdistan Region
The Prime Minister once again dismissed recurring allegations regarding an Israeli presence in the Kurdistan Region, calling them baseless.
“This is a false claim that has never been substantiated. There are no Israelis in the Kurdistan Region. These accusations are often used by those who have no valid reason to attack Kurdistan, so they fabricate them as a pretext,” he said.
