ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdish dried foods, such as walnuts, almonds, and figs, are a staple in the markets of the Kurdistan Region, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. Despite their higher prices compared to imported alternatives, these locally sourced products continue to attract consumers due to their superior taste and natural cultivation methods.

In an interview with Kurdistan24, food expert Misdaq Tawfiq highlighted the exceptional quality of Kurdish walnuts, stating, “Kurdish walnuts have a distinct flavor. They are naturally grown, free from chemical fertilizers, and always fresh. The fresher the product, the better the taste.”

Many consumers in Kurdistan insist that locally grown produce offers an unmatched flavor. “I have tasted both Kurdish and American almonds, and I must say the Kurdish ones are far superior,” said a resident of Duhok. “Natural cultivation without chemical fertilizers gives them an exceptional taste.”

While the market is flooded with imported dried foods, local products remain in high demand despite their elevated prices. For instance, American almonds are sold at 15,000 Iraqi dinars per kilogram, while Kurdish almonds fetch over 23,000 dinars.

Duhok: A Hub for Agricultural Excellence

Duhok Province is renowned for its fertile lands and agricultural production, including grapes, apples, and almonds. With annual growth in local farming, more citizens are turning to homegrown products that reflect the region’s agricultural heritage.

Despite their premium price tags, locally sourced dried foods remain a favorite among consumers. Shop owners across Kurdistan affirm that their customers are willing to pay more for authentic Kurdish produce, recognizing its quality and deep connection to their homeland.
