ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — A senior official from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) revealed on Saturday that a framework agreement between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and PUK for forming a new government has been finalized, with a high-level meeting expected soon to unify positions on key posts.
Derbaz Kosrat Rasul, a prominent member of the PUK’s Politburo, told Kurdistan24 that both parties are preparing to meet in the near future to resolve differences and present a unified stance, especially ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary elections.
“We want Kurds to stand united in Baghdad and avoid internal disputes,” Rasul emphasized. “Unity will bring greater achievements for our people.”

Longstanding Divisions, Renewed Cooperation
The KDP and PUK—two dominant Kurdish political parties—have had a historically complicated relationship, often competing for influence both within the Kurdistan Region and in Baghdad. Disagreements over electoral processes, administrative control, and distribution of top governmental posts have long-stalled efforts to form a cohesive regional administration. However, mounting political pressure and looming national elections have pushed both sides toward compromise.
As part of broader reconciliation efforts, both parties now appear ready to share responsibilities and present a united front. The upcoming meeting between the KDP and PUK is expected to set the tone for a new power-sharing arrangement that may stabilize the Kurdistan Region's internal politics ahead of critical national developments.
President Barzani Urges Unity and Swift Government Formation to Safeguard Kurdistan’s Federal Standing
Amid prolonged political gridlock and rising regional tensions, President Masoud Barzani has called for the swift formation of a new Kurdistan Regional Government cabinet, urging all political parties—especially the KDP and PUK—to demonstrate unity and shared responsibility. Speaking at the opening of the 17th Erbil International Book Fair, Barzani emphasized that true stability and progress in the Kurdistan Region depend on inclusive governance and cooperation rooted in the principles of partnership, balance, and consensus.
He warned that continued delays in government formation not only weaken the region internally but also undermine its ability to defend constitutional rights and secure its share of federal resources from Baghdad. With unresolved disputes still lingering in Erbil-Baghdad relations, Barzani stressed that the 2005 Iraqi Constitution must remain the bedrock for dialogue, urging political courage from all sides to overcome past grievances and prevent deeper national instability.
