ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On Saturday, the Kurdish unity and solidarity conference is set to convene in Qamishlo, Western Kurdistan, bringing together nearly 50 Kurdish political parties and entities in a major initiative to consolidate the Kurdish national position in Syria.
The conference, held with the support of President Masoud Barzani and with the backing of international actors, marks a historic endeavor to unify Kurdish political voices amid Syria's evolving landscape.
Approximately 400 figures from across Western Kurdistan and broader Syrian Kurdish areas—Aleppo, Damascus, Azaz, Hama, and al-Bab—, representatives of the Kurdish National Council (KNC), the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), representatives from other parts of Kurdistan and other political parties are participating in the event.
Forging a Common Front for the Future of the Kurds in Syria
The conference aims to establish a joint Kurdish delegation tasked with negotiating with Syria’s prospective government to secure constitutional rights for the Kurdish people. This unifying effort seeks to ensure Kurdish participation in shaping Syria’s future governance.
A delegation from Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) has also arrived in Western Kurdistan to attend, while the Kurdistan Region has dispatched an official representative to affirm its support.
Dr. Hamid Darbandi, President Barzani’s envoy, is participating in the conference, emphasizing in his remarks that April 26 must serve as "a foundational moment toward Kurdish national unity," and expressing hope that the gathering would catalyze the building of a strong Kurdish national framework.
President Barzani's Endorsement: A Pivotal Boost
Dr. Darbandi underscored that President Barzani’s support for the conference signals an unwavering commitment to Kurdish cohesion, noting that the Kurdish people’s sacrifices must translate into a unified political strategy for the future.
On Friday, a delegation of Kurdish politicians from southeast Turkey (northern Kurdistan) also arrived in Western Kurdistan, further boosting the event’s significance. Their presence highlights the pan-Kurdish dimension of the unity project.
Historic Step Toward Kurdish National Unity
The Kurdish Unity Conference is the culmination of months of consultations between the Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), and other Kurdish factions, all working to bridge differences and forge a collective approach.
Today’s conference not only embodies a political milestone but is also seen as a strategic move toward realizing a democratic Syria where Kurds can safeguard their identity and political rights.
As the sessions unfold in Qamishlo, the Kurdish people’s eyes—across western Kurdistan, and the diaspora—remain firmly fixed on this critical event, hoping it heralds a new era of unity, resilience, and national aspiration.
