KRG Reaffirms Commitment to Kurdistan Region Civil Servant Salaries Amid Financial Challenges
At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani, on behalf of the Council, voiced the Kurdistan Region’s support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent ceasefire initiative between Iran and Israel.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday chaired a regular meeting of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Council of Ministers, reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to securing public sector salaries and expressing strong support for a U.S.-led ceasefire initiative aimed at stabilizing the Middle East.
At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Barzani, on behalf of the Council, voiced the Kurdistan Region’s support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent ceasefire initiative between Iran and Israel, praising efforts to promote peace and reduce regional tensions.
The session’s first agenda item focused on the Kurdistan Region’s financial status. Minister of Finance and Economy Awat Janab Noori presented a detailed report on the Region’s fiscal performance from January 1 to June 2. He provided data on revenues and expenditures, confirming that all relevant financial documents had been submitted monthly to the Iraqi Ministry of Finance and audited by both federal and regional oversight bodies.
Prime Minister Barzani praised the patience and resilience of Kurdistan Region civil servants in the face of financial hardships caused by the Iraqi Ministry of Finance’s recent suspension of KRG salary payments—a move the KRG considers unconstitutional and in contradiction with a Federal Supreme Court of Iraq ruling. He announced that a delegation from the federal government is expected to visit Erbil soon to discuss resolving the salary issue.
The Council emphasized that the Kurdistan Region has fully met its financial obligations and urged the Iraqi Ministry of Finance to resume the rightful salary payments without further delay.
To ensure fiscal discipline and strengthen transparency, the Council also approved the formation of a dedicated committee to review and optimize government spending. The committee will work in coordination with relevant ministries to restructure consumption-related expenditures and further prioritize salary disbursements.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment to protecting the financial rights of the people of the Kurdistan Region and maintaining a cooperative dialogue with the federal government to prevent future disputes.
