Iran’s Araghchi Rebukes EU Proposal to End Nuclear Program
Iran slams EU's call to end nuclear program as violation of NPT rights. Deputy FM Araghchi rejects EU mediation, declaring future talks 'meaningless' after Kallas' remarks. Tehran warns EU stance invalidates JCPOA and UNSC Resolution 2231 frameworks.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi issued a sharp rebuke on Wednesday to European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, asserting that recent remarks made by the EU undermine the foundational principles of the nuclear non-proliferation regime and render future negotiations with the bloc "meaningless."
EU's Call for Fresh Nuclear Talks Sparks Iranian Outrage
Araghchi, writing on his official X account, responded to Kallas’s earlier post calling for the resumption of talks to “end Iran’s nuclear program.” The EU High Representative had stated, “Negotiations on ending Iran's nuclear program should restart as soon as possible. Cooperation with IAEA must resume. The EU is ready to facilitate this. Any threats to pull out of the non-proliferation treaty don't help to lower tensions. This is what I told Abbas Araghchi today.”

Tehran: EU Disregards the NPT’s Legal Guarantees
In his response, Araghchi countered that such a stance reflects a disregard for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2231, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to which the EU is a formal party.
“If the Coordinator of the JCPOA Joint Commission believes that the objective of any potential negotiation is ‘ending Iran’s nuclear program’, it means that EU High Representative Kaja Kallas disregards the provisions of the NPT, which explicitly affirm the right of all signatories to develop, research, and use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes,” Araghchi stated.
Snapback Mechanism Deemed ‘Baseless’ by Tehran
He further warned that the EU’s position nullifies the legitimacy of existing legal frameworks. “The provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA no longer hold any validity for its official Coordinator, thereby rendering the so-called snapback mechanism baseless,” he said.
Araghchi concluded by asserting that the involvement of the European Union and its member states, including the United Kingdom, in any future negotiations would be “irrelevant and therefore meaningless” under the current posture adopted by Brussels.
