Polling stations close, vote counting begins across Kurdistan Region

The Independent High Elections and Referendum Commission (IHERC) on Monday announced the closure of polling stations following an hour extension, adding that ballot counting across the Kurdistan Region would begin.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Independent High Elections and Referendum Commission (IHERC) on Monday announced the closure of polling stations following an hour extension, adding that ballot counting across the Kurdistan Region would begin.

On Monday at 8:00 a.m. local time, voting for the independence referendum started as polling stations all over the region, including in the disputed territories, opened.

Over five million people were eligible to vote, according to the Independent High Elections and Referendum Commission (IHERC).

Hundreds of foreign observers are in the region to monitor the voting process, including a delegation of United Kingdom Members of Parliament who arrived on Saturday and who will ensure transparency of the voting process.

Online voting for the Kurdistan Region's referendum is now closed.
