Top Kurdistan Region officials congratulate Ebrahim Raisi on Iran election win

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday congratulated Iran's judiciary chief Ebrahim Raisi on winning the country's presidential elections.

"I congratulate Ebrahim Raisi on his election today as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the premier tweeted.

"My government looks forward to working with him to strengthen our long-standing relations based on mutual interest and respect, and advance regional peace and stability," he affirmed.

Iranian state media named 60-year-old Raisi as the winner Saturday, with more than 90 percent of the votes counted. He secured close to 62 percent of the vote, according to official data. Voter turnout was reported at nearly 49 percent, the lowest in the Islamic Republic's about 40-year history.

the Kurdistan Region prime minister's statement came following the region's president, Nechirvan Barzani, who addressed a letter to Iran's president-elect to offer his congratulations and wish him "success."

"The President expresses hope that the bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and Iran, during President-elect Raisi in office, develop further on the basis of mutual interests and neighborly relations," according to president Nechirvan Barzani's office.

Nechirvan Barzani "also hopes that Erbil and Baghdad’s cooperation with Tehran is further strengthened to secure peace and stability for both sides and for the greater region," the Kurdistan Region president's statement concluded.
