Zakho sees major infrastructure development following administrative independence
The decision to upgrade Zakho to independent status was a significant move by the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Region, paving the way for increased prosperity through numerous projects and enhanced services for its citizens.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A comprehensive campaign to develop infrastructure across administrative, economic, and service sectors has been launched in Zakho, following its establishment as an independent administration on September 20, 2021.
The decision to upgrade Zakho to independent status was a significant move by the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Region, paving the way for increased prosperity through numerous projects and enhanced services for its citizens.
Over the past three years, Zakho has seen 286 projects approved, with 218 completed and 68 currently under construction. These projects span various sectors:
- 9 projects in the municipalities, roads, and bridges sector
- 17 projects in the education and higher education sector
- 45 projects in the surface water, groundwater, and agriculture sectors
- 20 projects in the health sector
- 33 projects in the electricity sector
- 16 projects in the tourism and antiquities sector
- 54 projects in the government departments and endowments sector
Additionally, during the five years of the ninth cabinet's tenure, Zakho has seen the establishment of seven new general directorates, the conversion of 17 centers and offices into directorates, and the creation of 16 previously non-existent directorates. Notably, 81% of Zakho's streets have been paved.
Among the most important strategic projects planned for the future are the construction of a 60 km road, the development of an industrial zone, and the construction of the Anko Dam.
These initiatives are expected to significantly contribute to Zakho's development and prosperity, improving the overall living conditions for its citizens.
