ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Ismail Fattah Ismail, a member of the General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNCS), was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the countryside of northeast Syria’s Hasaka province, according to a source who spoke to Kurdistan24.

Fattah had been reported missing on January 16 while traveling between Karaki Laki and Qamishlo in northeastern Syria (Rojava). On January 19, his body was discovered near Tirbespi (al-Qahtaniyah), shocking his family and residents of Jal Agha.

The General Command of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) announced the initiation of an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death. However, no additional details have been disclosed so far.

In a statement issued on their official website, the KNCS accused the security forces of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) administration of detaining Fattah before his death.

The KNCS is a coalition of opposition Kurdish parties in Rojava. It has long maintained a tense rivalry with the PYD, which holds significant regional political authority. In recent years, KNCS offices have been repeatedly targeted, and its members have faced arrests and other forms of pressure, often attributed to groups linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

This incident occurs amid efforts to foster political unity among Kurdish factions. Recently, a meeting between President Masoud Barzani and Mazloum Abdi, the commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), garnered widespread acclaim across the Kurdish political spectrum and beyond, highlighting the importance of consolidating a unified Kurdish stance in shaping Syria’s future.
