U.S. Reaffirms Support for Iraq and Kurdistan in Meeting with President Nechirvan Barzani

The two sides discussed the current situation in the Kurdistan Region, the parliamentary election results, and ongoing efforts to form a new cabinet.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a meeting with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Wednesday, Ambassador Daniel Rubinstein, Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy to Iraq emphasized the United States' dedication to ongoing aid and support for both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The meeting addressed a wide range of topics, including the United States' relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the dynamics between Erbil and Baghdad. 

The two sides discussed the current situation in the Kurdistan Region, the parliamentary election results, and ongoing efforts to form a new cabinet.

Additionally, “discussions encompassed the reunification of the Peshmerga forces, the reform initiatives within the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, and the evolving circumstances in Syria and the broader region,” said a statement by the region’s presidency. 

the statement revealed that Ambassador Rubinstein emphasized the United States' dedication to ongoing aid and support for both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. In response, President Nechirvan Barzani expressed gratitude to the United States for its contributions and backing, particularly in the battle against terrorism.

Both parties recognized the significance of upholding peace and stability in the region, committing to efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable peace. They exchanged views and opinions on the conditions of the Yazidis in Sinjar, the conditions of Christians and the components of the Nineveh Plain.

The Kurdistan Region maintains a longstanding partnership with the United States, particularly in security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, and political stability in Iraq. The U.S. has played a key role in supporting the region, notably during the fight against ISIS, providing military assistance, humanitarian aid, and diplomatic backing.

Amid ongoing political transitions and regional tensions, U.S. engagement remains crucial in fostering dialogue, advancing reforms, and ensuring stability in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
