ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Directorate of Mass Graves Affairs announced on Wednesday that the remains of 32 Yezidi genocide victims have been officially received in Baghdad and will be handed over to their families before a formal burial ceremony at the Yezidi Genocide Memorial in Sinjar.

According to an official statement provided to Kurdistan24, among the recovered remains, 19 belong to residents of Kojo, a village that witnessed one of the most brutal massacres committed by ISIS, while the rest are from other Yezidi-populated areas.

Expanding the Search for More Mass Graves

The Directorate of Mass Graves Affairs emphasized that specialized teams are continuing efforts to unearth additional mass graves in Sinjar and surrounding areas. The ongoing mission aims to locate, recover, and identify the remains of those who perished in the genocide.

According to the latest available data on the Yezidi mass graves, the directorate confirmed the discovery of 93 mass graves, with 55 already exhumed, while 38 remain untouched.

Hundreds of Remains Yet to Be Identified

The recovery process has so far led to the exhumation of 750 bodies, but the identification process remains incomplete. While 242 victims have been officially identified, staggering 508 remains are still undergoing forensic analysis to confirm their identities.

The discovery and repatriation of these remains underscore the enduring struggle for justice and recognition of Yezidi victims, as efforts continue to recover, identify, and properly bury those lost in one of the most heinous crimes of the 21st century.
