ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Ali Abdulrahman, Direct Manager at Mine Action Affairs in Erbil, announced on Friday that 43 anti-personnel mines have been successfully defused in the village of Piromar, located in the Choman district—one of the most hazardous minefields in the Kurdistan Region.

The Piromar minefield spans 95,200 square meters, of which 91,700 square meters have already been cleared, Abdulrahman stated. Since the beginning of the operation, a total of 2,922 landmines and 140 explosive remnants of war have been recovered.

He added that, across Erbil province, more than 1,187 square meters of land have been cleared of landmines so far this year alone.

Despite these achievements, Abdulrahman highlighted that mine contamination remains a serious issue. “We have cleared 47 million square meters of land so far, which accounts for 53% of the total mine-contaminated areas,” he said. “The remaining 47% still contain mines and unexploded ordnance.”

Efforts by Mine Action teams continue to play a vital role in making the Kurdistan Region safer for residents, farmers, and future development projects.
