Kurdistan Region Confirms Drone Attack on Sarsang Oil Field, Condemns Strike as Act of Terrorism
“The Ministry of Natural Resources strongly condemns and denounces these acts of terrorism against the Kurdistan Region’s vital economic infrastructure,” the statement read.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) on Tuesday confirmed that a drone strike targeted the Sarsang oil field earlier in the day, in what authorities are describing as a deliberate attack on vital economic infrastructure.
In a press release issued Tuesday, the MNR stated that the attack took place in the Chamanke district of Duhok Province. No casualties were reported. “The Ministry of Natural Resources strongly condemns and denounces these acts of terrorism against the Kurdistan Region’s vital economic infrastructure,” the statement read.
The incident follows a similar drone strike that occurred Monday evening on the Khurmala oil field in Erbil Province, marking a worrying trend of targeted attacks on the region’s energy sector.
Tuesday’s confirmation by the MNR aligns with earlier reports from HKN Energy Ltd., which stated that an explosion occurred at around 7:00 a.m. local time at one of its production facilities in the Sarang field, part of the larger Sarsang block. Although HKN Energy did not specify the cause of the explosion, the company confirmed that all personnel were safe and no injuries had occurred, while emergency response teams continued battling the fire at the site.
Operations at the HKN facility have been suspended pending a full assessment and safety clearance. The company noted it is coordinating with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure the safety of surrounding communities.
A Kurdistan24 correspondent at the scene reported that the explosion appeared to be the result of a drone strike.
The recent escalation has raised concerns over the security of the Kurdistan Region’s oil infrastructure, which remains a cornerstone of the region’s economy and a critical source of revenue. No group has yet claimed responsibility for either attack.
