DEM Party Spokesperson: ‘No Democracy in Turkey Without Resolving Kurdish Issue’

“Arresting those elected by the people is against the law and democracy. It is shameful for the authorities to continue these operations at such a sensitive time for the country,” Dogan told reporters at a press conference in Ankara.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) spokesperson Aysegul Dogan said on Friday that Turkey cannot be considered a democracy until the Kurdish issue is resolved, condemning the arrest of elected officials as unlawful and undemocratic.

“Arresting those elected by the people is against the law and democracy. It is shameful for the authorities to continue these operations at such a sensitive time for the country,” Dogan told reporters at a press conference in Ankara.

She criticized Friday’s operation in Beyoğlu Municipality in Istanbul, saying it undermines the peace process. “If the Kurdish issue is not resolved, Turkey will not be democratic. We will organize mass demonstrations against this operation and explain to both the Turkish public and our own community what is happening with the peace process,” she said.

Dogan stressed that her party will closely follow the work of the parliamentary commission established to address the Kurdish issue. “Their efforts should focus on people and aim to achieve tangible progress. The commission’s planned meetings with the public and various stakeholders next week are an important step toward advancing the peace process,” she noted.

She added that the commission was formed at the DEM Party’s request and that her party has provided a list of individuals influential to the peace process.
