WATCH: Fire causes multiple explosions at Erbil military weapon warehouse

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A military weapon storage facility exploded late Sunday night in the province of Erbil, with no casualties so far reported.

In a video received by Kurdistan 24 shortly after the incident, a number of small explosions were filmed at a facility near the village of Kani Qirzhala which lies west of Erbil on the road to Mosul.

Sources say the warehouse fire was caused by high temperatures and inadequate storage of weapons and explosives as the region is currently in the middle of a heat wave.

The firefighting department successfully contained the blaze within the weapons depot’s grounds, as they had with a massive fire that broke out in Erbil’s Qaisary bazaar Saturday evening. Firefighters in Erbil were tied up putting out the market fire until the next day.

The Kani Qirzhala weapons storage blast is yet another incident in a series of explosions which have occurred around the Kurdistan Region over the past summer months, all of which have caused only material damage.

In early July, the Kurdistan Region’s Parliament summoned representatives of the Ministry of Peshmerga to shed light on the causes of hazardous fires and explosions at munition and weapon warehouses across Sulaimani and Erbil the month prior.
