ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Abdulkarim Khusraw, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Department of Coordination and Follow-Up, has emphasized the multi-dimensional significance of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s official visit to Washington, highlighting economic development and security cooperation as central pillars of the mission.
“This visit encompasses several strategic aspects,” Khusraw told Kurdistan24, “with the economy being one of its core dimensions. The Prime Minister remains fully committed to safeguarding the integrity of existing contracts and ensuring the prosperity of the Kurdistan Region.”
U.S.-KRG Energy Partnerships Deepen
On May 19, Prime Minister Barzani oversaw the signing of two landmark agreements in Washington with U.S. energy giants HKN Energy and WesternZagros, during a ceremony hosted at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. These agreements—estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars—aim to bolster the Kurdistan Region’s energy sector and enhance its economic infrastructure.
According to Khusraw, “One of the key items on the agenda of the ninth cabinet is to diversify and deepen relations with our allies, especially in the economic and political arenas. The future of Kurdistan’s energy sector will be a top topic of discussion throughout this visit.”
Reorganizing Peshmerga Forces a Priority
In addition to economic issues, Khusraw noted that Prime Minister Barzani’s talks with senior officials from the administration of President Donald Trump will also focus on reorganizing the Peshmerga forces, a move viewed as essential to securing long-term regional stability.
“American officials attach great importance to this issue,” he said, “particularly as the region still faces threats of terrorism. The Peshmerga have played a decisive role in defeating ISIS, and their future organization is key to confronting emerging challenges.”
Protecting Contracts and Legal Commitments
Khusraw further stressed that Prime Minister Barzani is committed to preserving the legal sanctity of the Kurdistan Region’s energy contracts, ensuring both the rights of the Kurdish and Iraqi people as well as foreign investors and companies.
“These agreements are fully aligned with constitutional principles,” he added, referring to ongoing tensions with Baghdad over energy autonomy. “Kurdistan is determined to honor its obligations and protect the rights of all stakeholders involved.”
Kurdistan’s Role in a Changing Middle East
Highlighting the broader geopolitical context, Khusraw said the Kurdistan Region remains a key U.S. ally amid rapid transformations across the Middle East.
“The region is undergoing a fundamental shift,” he noted. “In this context, it is vital for the United States to maintain a strong and stable Kurdistan. Over the past several years, the Kurdistan Region has proven to be a reliable partner, and we are working to deepen that friendship.”
