Iraq’s Foreign Ministry: US embassy move grave violation, will lead to dangerous consequences

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry has warned against the dangerous consequences of the United States’ embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Iraqi Foreign Ministry has warned against the dangerous consequences of the United States’ embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

In a statement on Monday, Iraqi Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed al-Mahjub expressed Iraq’s opposition to the American embassy move to Jerusalem, stating that the decision had angered millions of Arabs, Muslims, and Christians.

“[The US decision] is a grave violation of the international resolutions and path to peace,” the Foreign Ministry statement read.

“Iraq expresses solidarity with the people of Palestine, warning of the consequences of the US decision on regional stability which will leave a negative impact on political and security aspects,” Mahjub added.

According to the statement, Iraq and its allies “succeeded in thwarting Israel’s plans of becoming a member of the UN Security Council.”

“The Iraqi Foreign Ministry condemns the Israeli security forces’ targeting of civilians in Gaza,” Mahjub said, noting that the use of violence against civilians is “considered a grave violation of human rights.”

President Donald Trump announced on Dec. 6 that America would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, officially recognizing it as Israel’s capital in the process.

Trump’s decision received backlash from many countries who argued it would increase tensions between Israelis and Palestinians who have been locked in decades of war and disagreement, particularly regarding the status of the city.
