ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Tuesday early morning, a car bomb exploded in a crowded street in Baghdad’s Karrada district, killing and wounding dozens of people.

Iraqi officials stated that a car bomb exploded outside a popular ice cream shop in the Karrada district in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, killing 15 people and wounding 30 others on Tuesday.

“Hospital and police officials say the attack struck late Monday, just days into the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims fast during daylight hours,” the report added.

In an online statement, the so-called Islamic State (IS)  claimed responsibility for the attack.

The jihadist group has carried out many attacks on the Shia population in Iraq, whom they regard as apostates.

Brett McGurk, the US Special Presidential Envoy to the US-led coalition against IS, condemned the overnight attack in a post on his official Twitter account.

"Isis [IS] terrorists tonight in Baghdad target children & families enjoying time together at an ice cream shop. We stand w/Iraq against this evil," McGurk stated.
