258 killed, wounded in Iraq during May: UNAMI

The Iraqi capital of Baghdad was the worst affected province due to violence and terror attacks during May, with 117 civilian casualties.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Ninety-five civilians were killed and 163 more injured due to violence, terrorism, and armed conflict in Iraq during the month of May, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) stated on Thursday.

According to the UNAMI statement, the Iraqi capital of Baghdad was the worst affected province due to violence and terror attacks during May, with 117 civilian casualties of which 45 were killed, and 72 injured.

Diyala Province was the second hardest hit area with nine killed and 35 more injured followed by Kirkuk Province with nine dead and 15 wounded, it added.

The figures posted do not include casualties among the police and other security forces, the organization noted

According to casualty figures recorded by UNAMI for the month of April, a total of 68 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 122 injured in “acts of terrorism, violence, and armed conflict.”

Since Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the Islamic State’s (IS) military defeat in Iraq late last year, IS has resorted to guerrilla-style attacks reminiscent of tactics used when the group first emerged in mid-2014.
