ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Iraqi military on Saturday paraded in Baghdad’s Green Zone to celebrate victory against the Islamic State (IS) in Mosul.
The parade took place in the heavily fortified Green Zone where most of the government offices and foreign embassies are located.
Many Iraqi officials and military commanders attended the celebration including the Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi who is the Commander-in-Chief of Iraqi troops.
The parade was organized in the early morning to avoid the hot weather in Iraq as it rises to 50 degrees Celsius in the afternoon, according to security officials.
On July 10, Abadi officially announced the full liberation of Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq, after almost nine months of fierce fighting against IS extremists.
Mosul had been under the occupation of the militant group since June 2014. The city was the self-proclaimed capital of IS in Iraq.
