ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The US Department of State announced on Thursday that an American company has received a contract to build the new US Consulate General in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.
“The new Consulate General will include a Chancery, Marine residence, housing, support facilities and facilities for the community. The architect for the project is EYP,” the statement said.
“As part of the Department’s Capital Security Construction Program, since 1999, the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has completed 137 new diplomatic facilities and has an additional 48 projects in design or under construction,” the statement added.
It was previously reported that the US was planning on building the biggest diplomatic office in the Kurdistan Region represented by a Consulate General.
“OBO’s mission is to provide safe, secure, and functional facilities that represent the US government to host nations and support our staff in achieving US foreign policy objectives,” the statement concluded.
EYP that designed the US’s new Consulate General explained that the new compound “embraces the guiding principles of safety, functionality, and positively representing the US in relation to the host government and region.”
“The goal was to create a community that would have both the features and amenities familiar to the American population while making a connection to the culture of the local people with whom they interact on a daily basis,” EYP said on its website.
