Kurdistan, Iraq form committee to boost energy coordination

Iraqi government is to buy electricity from Kurdistan Region's private companies.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi government delegation met in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, to discuss boosting coordination in electricity and oil sectors.

On Wednesday, an Iraqi government delegation consisting of ministers of oil, electricity, agriculture, and education arrived in Kurdistan Region and were received by the KRG officials at the Erbil International Airport.

According to a statement on the KRG website, bilateral relations, restoring services to the war-torn areas and boosting coordination in the energy sector were the main topics discussed with the Iraqi side and the KRG officials represented by PM Nechirvan Barzani, and Deputy PM Qubad Talabani.

Erbil and Baghdad agreed to continue dialogues to resolve issues and they discussed forming a joint committee to cooperate in oil and electricity sectors to better serve citizens, the statement added.

Nechirvan Barzani said everyone benefits from the liberation of Mosul and so both sides should contribute to restoring lives in a post-Islamic State (IS) era and facilitate the return of the displaced people to their areas of origin.

Barzani expressed the KRG’s readiness to coordinate in restoring services in the affected areas, the KRG statement said.

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity is expected to sign a contract with two private companies in the Kurdistan Region to supply electricity to the liberated areas in Mosul.
