Kurdish security in Soran confiscate 31kg of heroin smuggled from Iran

Kurdish Asayish (security) in the city of Soran on Saturday revealed that they had confiscated 31 kilograms of illicit drugs coming from the neighboring country of Iran.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdish Asayish (security) in the city of Soran on Saturday revealed that they had confiscated 31 kilograms of illicit drugs coming from the neighboring country of Iran.

“We confiscated a car and arrested the driver in Choman town on Thursday for carrying dozens of kilograms of heroin,” Sadi Ali, the head of Soran Security Directorate, told Kurdistan 24.

The 31 kilograms of drugs were brought from Iran through its mountainous areas, he said.

The driver is from the town of Harir in Erbil province. Security identified him with the initials A. A. S.

According to Ali, the amount was brought to the Kurdistan Region via “transit from other countries.” However, he did not offer further details.

Over the past 11 months, Soran Security alone have confiscated 140 kilograms of illegal narcotics, excluding other offices like the drug-prevention directorates in Soran, Haji Omaran, Choman, and surrounding towns, Ali added.

“The crucial point to highlight is that the smuggling of illicit drugs to the Kurdistan Region is on the rise each day,” he warned, urging Kurdish authorities to increase their efforts to control the situation.
