Canadian sniper kills IS in world's longest shot

MOSUL, Baghdad (Kurdistan24) - Canada’s elite special forces in Iraq broke the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a distance of 3,540 meters.

A sniper of Joint Task Force 2 killed an Islamic State (IS) insurgent during an operation in Iraq within the last month.

“The Canadian Special Operations Command can confirm that a member of Joint Task Force 2 successfully hit a target at 3,540 metres,” the forces said in a statement on Thursday.

“For operational security reasons and to preserve the safety of our personnel and our Coalition partners we will not discuss precise details on when and how this incident took place,” the statement added.

The bullet was fired from a McMillan TAC-50 rifle set on a high-rise tower and took 10 seconds to travel the 2.14 miles towards the fighter, who was attacking Iraqi soldiers.

This smashed the last record set by a Briton Craig Harrison, who killed a Taliban soldier with a 338 Lapua Magnum rifle at a range of 8,120 feet(1.54 miles) in 2009.

The kill was independently verified by a video camera and other data.

Canad has a smaller Armed Forces compared to the United States and Britain.

The skill of the JTF2 sniper in taking down an insurgent at 3,540 meters required math skills, great eyesight, the precision of ammunition and firearms, and excellent training.
