PHOTOS: Firefighters extinguish blaze in Erbil's old market

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A massive fire broke out in Erbil’s Qaisary bazaar late Saturday night, causing extensive damage to shops and stores nearby. 

The market area is located at the center of the Kurdistan Region’s capital, near the historic citadel.

Due to its intensity, it took until Sunday afternoon for the Civil Defense teams to put out the fire.

The Erbil Civil Defense teams are yet to release a report on what caused the fire or the extent of the damage. According to eyewitnesses, however, an electrical short circuit started the blaze.
