BCF, Iraqi displacement ministry deliver aid to IDP camp in Erbil

In total, 1,834 food packages were distributed to 917 IDP families in the camp

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq’s Ministry of Displacement and Migration in coordination with the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) delivered on Saturday food packages to over 900 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Bahrka IDP camp in Erbil province.

The aid efforts have been ongoing monthly, Bahrka camp director Badradin Najmadin told Kurdistan 24 on Saturday. “The ministry provides the food, and we [the camp and BCF] administer the distribution process,” Najmadin added.

“Each family received two food packages, containing rice, cooking oil, lentil, etc.,” the director said. In total, 1,834 food packages were distributed to 917 IDP families in the camp, he noted.

The residents of the camp are Iraqi IDPs who fled their provinces following the rise of the so-called Islamic State in 2014. Along with the Iraqi displaced persons, the Kurdistan Region hosts Syrian refugees as well. According to Kurdistan Region’s official figures, about 1.5 million refugees and IDPs have been sheltered safely in the region.

In late May, the BCF delivered a medical batch consisting of anti-inflammatory injections to the Kurdish region of Syria (Rojava), which has lacked necessities to fight the highly contagious coronavirus disease.

The BCF is one of the most active humanitarian NGOs in Kurdistan that often provides a substantial amount of aid to internally displaced persons and refugees in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and northern Syria. It also has multiple programs that aim to improve the lives of displaced children.

The organization was founded in 2005 and, in its own words, “strives to honor the great legacy of Malla Mustafa Barzani, the leader of the Kurdish Liberation Movement and influencer of the contemporary Kurdish nation.”
