Abadi’s Nasr coalition warns against attempts to form sectarian-based government

A spokesperson for the al-Nasr Coalition called on the people and national parties to stand against any attempts to create a sectarian-based state at the expense of a civic and system-based one.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The al-Nasr Coalition, headed by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, has warned the winning political parties against a return to sectarian alignments.

Hussein al-Adili, the spokesperson of the al-Nasr Coalition, said some politicians are trying to create sectarian fronts as a base to form coalitions and political blocs in the next government.

“After passing the stage of sectarian and ethnic division in our holy defense against [the Islamic State] and participating in the elections with national lists void of sectarianism, we see some politicians trying to re-establish sectarian fronts as a base for the formation of a coalition that would bring Iraq back to sectarian-based divisions,” Adili said in a statement.

The statement did not name the political parties or the politicians.

Adili called on the people and national parties to stand against any attempts to create a sectarian-based state at the expense of a civic and system-based one.

He added that the Nasr Coalition would remain a national project against any plots to split the country based on sectarian and ethnic divisions.

Late Friday night, the IHEC announced the final results of the parliamentary elections held on May 12. Nasr finished in third place winning 42 seats across the country.
