KRG PM in Baghdad to ‘strengthen relations’ between Kurdistan and Iraq

The Iraqi and Kurdish officials highlighted the importance of active participation of all political parties in the Kurdistan Region in administrating the country.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) met with Iraq’s Prime Minister-designate and the Parliament Speaker in Baghdad on Wednesday as the deadline approaches for a new cabinet.

KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani met with Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Adel Adul Mahdi to speak about the political process and the latest developments in Iraq and the region, a statement on the KRG website read.

The statement said both sides also discussed negotiations between Erbil and Baghdad with the aim to continue talks and resolve issues between both sides within the framework of the Iraqi Constitution.

Additionally, Barzani and Abdul Mahdi addressed the process of forming the new Iraqi government, the statement said. The Iraqi and Kurdish officials agreed that the new government should respond to the demands and the constitutional rights of all Iraqi components, it added.

On Wednesday, Abdul Mahdi’s office announced that the prime minister-designate would submit a new cabinet to parliament for endorsement next week.

In another meeting, PM Barzani sat with Mohammed al-Halbousi, the Iraqi Parliament Speaker.

According to a statement on the KRG’s website, Barzani and Halbousi discussed the formation of a new government which meets the demands of the people of Iraq, resolves issues, and strengthens relations between Erbil and Baghdad.

The meeting highlighted the importance of active participation of all political parties in the Kurdistan Region in administrating the country and in the new government’s program, the statement said.

Both sides reiterated on joint efforts to form a strong government that brings political stability, provides services, and counters terrorism, it added.

Prime Minister Barzani also met with his Iraqi counterpart Haider al-Abadi on Wednesday.
